Seminar: An introduction to mentoring

The aim of the seminar was to provide some insights and  hear about participants' (both mentors and mentees) experiences,  including peer mentoring.

Mentoring Roadshow

The Mentoring Roadshow was organised to showcase how the Central Clinical School and School of Public Health and Preventive medicine implemented and ran their respective mentoring programs. It was an opportunity for other Monash schools to gain valuable insights into the pitfalls and challenges associated with establishing, running and evaluating mentoring programs for ECRs. The audience onsite mainly consisted of ECRs either currently in the program or those thinking of joining, the mentoring subcommittee members, the ECR school coordinators and various other interested parties. Externally we had several groups video-link in, including MIMR, SOBS, Bairnsdale and others, mainly consisting of ECR committee members at these respective schools/locations.

Introduction to mentoring

The Introduction to mentoring seminar was organised to provide an overview of the mentoring process and act as an onboarding platform for new mentees interested in joining our mentoring program. Additionally, the session was also recorded and video-linked to other sites to enable fellow Monash Schools to benefit from the content presented and to assist them in running their own mentoring programs. An external consultant, Linda Betts, from ‘Linda Betts and Associates’ presented the bulk of the material, drawing on her years of experience in deploying and managing mentoring programs in various organisations. The audience onsite mainly consisted of ECRs thinking of joining the 2013-2014 ECR mentoring program, while externally it was a mixture of ECRs and ECR committees from various sites.

The program was evaluated quarterly.  Majority of comments were positive with encouraging improvements to the quantity and quality of outcomes from mentoring relationships.

Formally evaluated, with mostly positive comments/feedback. Deemed worthwhile on an ongoing basis. Scale program to larger numbers.
