Monash to deliver new paramedicine degree for Singapore Civil Defence Force

Monash is set to deliver a new distance-learning Bachelor’s degree in Paramedicine program for Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedics, with the first course beginning in March 2023.

A Monash University student in their green paramedic uniformMonash's Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Professor Christina Mitchell AO, and Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner Yong Meng Wah, SCDF's director of emergency medical services, confirmed the agreement between Monash and SCDF today during an online signing ceremony of a letter of intent.

Singapore is a leader in paramedic education and training in Southeast Asia. SCDF will continue to improve in this discipline by lifting their training standards from an Advanced Diploma to a Bachelor's degree with the help of Monash’s long-standing excellence in this field. As part of the agreement, Monash has committed to running regular research workshops for SCDF and providing mentorship for paramedics undertaking research projects. There will also be opportunities to share data and publish joint research in peer-reviewed journals.

“It is globally significant that our Bachelor of Paramedicine course will be offered at SCDF in Singapore as many countries still don't have Bachelor degrees as a minimum for paramedics, including Canada and the United States. Building a strong partnership between the University and SCDF greatly benefits our students, our communities, and the professional standing of paramedics,” said Monash's Head of Department of Paramedicine, Professor Brett Williams.

SCDF will also be recognised as a clinical placement provider for Monash students and selected SCDF staff will be appointed to join Monash's team to deliver the course in Singapore.

The signing ceremony was attended by delegates from Monash, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and the Singapore Defence Force. Professor Christina Mitchell delivered a speech that described the agreement as the “next step in a lasting partnership program between Monash and Singapore Civil Defence Force.” This is not the first partnership program between Monash and SCDF. In 2020, Monash led a full-day research skills workshop for paramedics from SCDF.

“We’re excited to continue building our relationship with SCDF and continue to help improve paramedic education and training on a global scale,” said Professor Williams.
