Claire’s researcher profile

Professor Johnson was recently appointed to the Vivian Bullwinkel Chair of Palliative Care Nursing, a joint appointment with Monash Nursing and Midwifery, and Eastern Health.

Immediately prior to taking up the Vivian Bullwinkel Chair, Professor Johnson was the manager of the Cancer and Palliative Care Research and Evaluation Unit at The University of Western Australia. She lead a broad portfolio of clinical, psycho-social and health services projects which aimed to improve care and outcomes for people diagnosed with or affected by cancer or a life-limiting illness.

Professor Johnson’s research focus is on health services development, outcome measurement and the development and use of routinely collected clinical data to assess and inform service improvement. Professor Johnson is the lead investigator on numerous research and evaluation projects which have informed policy, models of care and service implementation. These have included an evaluation of the WA Psycho Oncology Service, an exploration study of palliative care in non-specialist settings and, currently, an investigation of care pathways and out of pocket costs for people diagnosed with cancer in rural and outer metropolitan Western Australia and a program of research to develop a system for the ongoing collection of end of life care data in general practice. She is an investigator for the internationally recognised Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration which has embedded clinical assessment into the routine care of patients in palliative care services and the use of data to promote quality improvement

Professor Johnson has contributed to the strategic development of palliative care services through her contribution to numerous state advisory bodies such as the WA Palliative Care Advisory Committee. As the inaugural academic co-chair of the WA Palliative Care Research Collaboration, she was instrumental in promoting palliative care research is WA.

As the Vivian Bullwinkel Chair of Palliative Care Nursing, Professor Johnson will lead research and education programs into palliative and end of life care with the aim of improving services for the dying, their families and carers.
