OUR ADVANCED NURSING STUDENTS
Meet our students and discover why they chose Monash to further their education and career.
Rebecca Taylor-Bowman – Nurse Practitioner Specialisation
With her first year completed, Rebecca enthuses, “The course content has been both interesting and challenging. I feel that I’ve already made significant advancements in my knowledge base since commencing and have made significant changes to my practice as a result.”
Rebecca is currently developing a proposed mode of care for a nurse practitioner position in her workplace. “I am proud to be a nurse,” she says “Being able to endorse as a nurse practitioner would place me in the privileged position of being a nursing leader with respected clinical expertise and the extensions of practice granted to an endorsed nurse practitioner.” Rebecca hopes to provide a holistic approach to diagnosis, treatment and case management, ultimately improving access and quality of services her patients need.
When asked what advice she has for future Master of Advanced Nursing students, Rebecca shares, “It’s a massive commitment and the workload is intense but it’s an exciting way to challenge yourself and advance your nursing career.”
Chloe Peppin – ICU Specialisation
“I’m currently employed at Monash Health and work within their Intensive Care Units as a Critical Care Registered Nurse. I chose to study the Master of Advanced Nursing (Intensive Care) at Monash as I believed it would provide me with the greatest career outcomes. This University has worked tirelessly to forge great industry connections, and a degree from Monash is well recognized and valued in my sector.
The Clayton campus is simply amazing! The learning facilities are accessible, especially for shift workers. Having access to the postgraduate lounge and facilities after hours helped me complete my assessments and prepare for exams.
Completion of the Master of Advanced Nursing has made me a better and more desirable ICU nurse. I apply the skills I’ve learnt throughout the course on every shift. I’m able to share specialist knowledge and skills I’ve gained with new students and my peers.
This degree has helped uncover so many career options. I could go into patient and student education, develop leadership skills in management, be a part of a research team, work in a clinic, or even continue studying to become a nurse practitioner.”
Leo Gregor – Emergency Specialisation
Leo Gregor is an emergency nurse based in the Northern Territory who chose to study his Master of Advanced Nursing remotely.
For me personally, living in the NT, remote study has meant that I have had the ability to study a Master of Advanced Nursing and to access quality education without having to incur very expensive travel costs or heavily disrupt my working life. I am a firm believer that further education should not just be a privilege for city dwellers and that people living in rural and remote Australia should also be able to access well trained health care practitioners. The remote approach to study is helping me to support this very personal goal.
The course is very well designed and the use of technology such as Google Hangouts and discussion boards meant that I still felt like a part of a group whilst my lecturers have been easy to access. As a result, interactions are more personal, and the impact of not having fellow students to meet face to face with to discuss assignments and the material covered in lectures is limited.
Studying through Monash was very much about undertaking post graduate study with an educational institution that has a proven track record for success and a well-regarded reputation. Although I undertook my undergraduate studies at another institution,
I was always very impressed by the quality of nurses I met who had been trained at Monash University. This, combined with a course that appeared to have the flexibility, breadth and depth of study I felt would make me a better practitioner and ultimately benefit my patients meant that there was no question about where I would be undertaking my graduate studies.
