The Victorian Heart Hospital
The first and only dedicated heart hospital in the country, the Victorian Heart Hospital will be located within the Monash University campus and operated by Monash Health as part of its network. Monash University’s involvement will make this hub the centre of heart research and teaching in Australia.
Heart disease remains the country’s leading cause of death for both men and women and accounts for more than $15 billion in spending in the national health budget annually. Australia’s First Nations Peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse Australians, and those living in remote and rural communities, are disproportionately burdened by heart disease. With substantial investment by the Victorian Government, the Victorian Heart Hospital will bring world-leading cardiovascular care to all Victorians, and put specialised life-saving services within close reach of residents of Melbourne’s south-east.
Set to open in 2022, the Victorian Heart Hospital will provide a platform to integrate world-leading research into clinical practice. Led by Monash University’s Victorian Heart Institute (VHI), this partnership will accelerate the development of new devices and therapies and improve patient care, all while strengthening Victoria’s growing medical technology and pharmaceutical industries. It is expected that within the first five years of operation, the new hospital will deliver nearly $400 million in economic benefit to the Victorian community. More than $110 million of this is expected to be as a direct result of the hospital being co-located at Monash University.
Professor Steve Nicholls, a world-renowned cardiologist and clinical researcher, heads the both the Victorian Heart Hospital, and Monash University’s Victorian Heart Institute.
“The Victorian Heart Hospital is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a living laboratory, which accelerates the speed at which new Monash University discoveries can be delivered to patients,” Professor Nicholls said.
“The rich diversity and expertise across the University allows us to tackle the biggest challenges in cardiovascular health in new and exciting ways not possible until now.”
