8. Milestones

The information contained on this page is informed by MGE policy. We endeavour to keep it up to date, however for more information please refer to the Graduate Research Progress Management Procedures and the Monash Doctoral Handbook. In addition, the faculty have also set their own Faculty Milestone Requirements.

Milestones play an important role in your graduate research training. They are designed to support and facilitate your progress towards your thesis submission date, providing you with an opportunity to receive structured feedback on your progress to date. It is compulsory for your main supervisor to attend and highly recommended that associate supervisors also attend.

They are not only a mechanism for progress management; they are also a research development opportunity, helping you refine the skills required to present your research to your academic peers.

There are four milestones you will complete during your candidature:

DateRequirement/Milestone
6 months8.1 Six Month Review
12 months8.2 Confirmation
24 months8.3 Progress Review (Mid-Candidature Review)
36 months8.4 Final Review (Pre-Submission Seminar)

Preparing for your Milestone (all except 6 month review)

It’s your responsibility to ensure your milestone runs smoothly and is completed before your milestone due date (as recorded in WES).

Scheduling a Milestone

We will set aside approximately one or two days a month for milestone presentations.  As soon as you are able, you should discuss with your supervisors and lock in a suitable date. Available dates can be found in the Psych Booking System.

Organising a Milestone Review Panel

The Milestone Review Panel must consist of a Chair and at least two appropriately qualified independent members, one of whom is to be an academic staff member drawn from the student's academic unit, faculty or from another academic unit or faculty within the University. Where appropriate, one member may be external to the University with relevant expertise.  No panel member, including the Chair, should be (or have been) directly involved with the student's specific project, for example, as a current or former supervisor. The Graduate Programs Office will assist in appointing the panel chair, but it is your responsibility to organise both panel members, and to flag if there is a conflict of interest with the panel chair.

Initiating a Milestone on the Online System

The Milestone review process is managed through an online system. At least 5 working days prior to your presentation, you will need to initiate the process by submitting the details of your presentation and the required documentation (outlined below). Oncey our supervisor has reviewed your submission, it will be automatically distributed to your panel ahead of the presentation.

The requirements for each milestone are outlined below.
