Internship Opportunities (2018 archive)

The PMH3110 Psychology impact internship unit at Monash provides students enrolled in the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)  (course code M3005*) opportunities to gain professional skills as part of an  internship-based unit over Summer Semester. There are five available streams including Global, Research, Industry, Health & Community, and Clinical, with suitable placements designed to enhance each student’s learning experiences and understand the various opportunities available to psychology graduates in the workforce.

*Please note that due to limited availability, students in the teach-out Bachelor of Psychology (with Honours) (course code 3883) are not eligible to apply.

Host Partnerships  for Summer Semester 2018

Location: Sri  Lanka
Stream:  Global

SLV.Global provides Psychology students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in Sri Lanka. Their focus is on global mental health and on bolstering the existing resources in the communities where they work. Their aim is to provide skilled volunteers the chance to participate in a well-rounded, culturally immersive experience, which involves working at psychiatric facilities, social initiatives for adults and children with disabilities and teaching English. Volunteers on all of their placements have the opportunity to learn from local professionals to increase their knowledge and enhance their skill set whilst being immersed in an exciting new culture.

A variety of research projects are available, with some projects specifically available only to internship students. Research areas include addiction, sleep, memory and cognition, and cognitive and clinical neuroscience.

Psych Press
Location: Melbourne
Stream: Industry

Psych Press is a leading developer, publisher and distributor of tailored psychological resource solutions used in the assessment and development of human capital. For instance, Psych Press developed the Australian version of the most popular personality test - Cattell’s 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire and the Emotional Reasoning Questionnaire. Much of this development work and consulting expertise centres around offering online solutions to organisations such as Holden-GM, Ericsson, Ernst & Young, Corrective Services etc.

RUAG is a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive aerospace and defence company with operations in most states of Australia. The internship will involve working closely with the Senior Manager, HR, gaining exposure to all areas of HR within a corporate environment. Projects are subject to change but may include:

  • reviewing RUAGs onboarding process
  • developing a new probationary period process
  • developing reward and recognition programs
  • research engagement survey providers and provide a recommendation
  • create new termination and redundancy procedures
  • develop a structured apprenticeship program

Hearth Personal Care Services
Location: Malvern East, VIC, note some travel may be required

Stream:  Health & Community

Justin (Managing Director of Hearth) could not find a service for his son that was personalised, responsive, took away the administrative burden and ultimately, provided quality trained support workers. So, within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Justin created "Hearth Personal Care Services". Hearth provides in-home care and community access for people with disabilities. Hearth is one of the fastest growing new Victorian providers. Late 2017, a Transport Accident Commission (TAC) participant wanted Hearth to provide services, so Hearth also obtained TAC accreditation early 2018 and is excited to bring its new and fresh approach to the TAC sector. Central to the Hearth pledge of providing responsive and personalised support are Relationship Managers who interview, train and support the match of the right support workers. Under the watch of our Relationship Managers, participants are assured of timely responses and a Hearth culture based on caring and teamwork.

Monash Psychology Centre

Location: Notting Hill, VIC

Stream: Clinical

The Monash Psychology Centre (MPC) provides a wide range of psychological services to members of the community, through a group of specialist clinics that are engaged in clinical psychology and neuropsychology areas of practice. The internship opportunity offers exposure to a range of activities associated with the running of an outpatient clinical service. Whilst it may not be possible to include students in therapy sessions, interns have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities with clinicians and provisional psychologists, together with the opportunity to participate in a clinical supervisors training workshop.

Internship placements are offered to successful candidates after a vigorous selection process. Interns are expected to demonstrate a high level of professional conduct, and to be prepared to engage in a professional workplace environment.  For this reason, the selection process encompasses more than consideration of academic results. Applicants are expected to:

  • achieve at least a distinction (70%) average across their university studies,
  • Satisfactorily completed 48 credit points, including PSY2061 and PSY2071
  • Submit a resume
  • Prepare a brief statement highlighting why they wish to participate in the internship
  • Be able to demonstrate any relevant extra-curricular activities
  • Attend a brief interview with Monash staff
  • Be aware that some internships may have further requirements such as further interviews, a Working with Children’s Check (WWCC), Police Check, immunisation/vaccinations.

The internship are currently offered over summer and host availability may restrict placement dates.

The first step in the selection process is to submit an application form by Tuesday 10 July 2018.
