Student Profile - Hector Thomson

Hector always intended to do a research year; he started his Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons) after completing his fourth year of medicine.

Hector’s clinically focussed research is a retrospective case review of all allergy presentations to Monash Health hospitals in 2014.

“I’m comparing anaphylaxis guidelines to actual practice in the paediatric emergency departments,” said Hector.

“My study will provide insight into how anaphylaxis is actually presenting to our emergency departments and how we are managing these kids both in the short and long term.”

Hector hopes his research will identify areas for improvement in the management of anaphylaxis and lead to further research studies.

“The staff in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health have been fantastic and very supportive,” said Hector.

“We are very fortunate to have weekly talks and bedside tutorials from consult cardiologist Dr Tony White, keeping us in touch with clinical medicine while undertaking our research projects.”

As a future medical doctor, Hector firmly believes research is critical.

“To practise evidence-based medicine it is so important to understand how data is produced,” added Hector.

“It is impossible to critique a study without understanding the realities of medical research.”
