How to apply
View
Should I apply as a domestic or international student?
You are considered a domestic student, and should apply as such, if you identify as any of the following:
- an Australian citizen;
- an Australian permanent resident;
- a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa;
- a New Zealand citizen.
All other applicants, including New Zealand permanent residents, should follow the instructions for international applicants.
How do I apply?
Domestic applicants must apply directly to Monash through my.application.
International applicants must apply through an agent in your country or directly to Monash.
When can I apply?
Domestic applications open on 1 May and close on 31 July. Late applications will not be considered.
International applications are open at any time. Late applications will not be considered.
- To be considered in the main round, applications must be submitted by 30 June.
- To be considered in the late round, applications close on 31 August.
Can I transfer into medicine at Monash?
Unfortunately, Monash University does not accept transfers into the Graduate Entry Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. Students currently studying a university degree who are interested in pursuing medical studies will need to apply, and be considered, for entry with all other applicants.
Are volunteer or extracurricular activities viewed favourably on my application?
The only things that are considered as part of your application are your undergraduate weighted average mark (WAM) or grade point average (GPA), and your performance at the interview.
However, having volunteer or extracurricular experience may give you a broader perspective on the challenges felt in communities served by health professions and so provide you with greater insight in an interview.
Will I be required to attend the interview (MMI) in-person or via Zoom?
Interviews will be held online via Zoom only. Interview dates are provided on our website.
Rules
View
How many times can I apply?
Applicants can only be considered for entry twice. These applications do not have to be in consecutive years.
I am re-applying for this course. Can I take the interview again?
Applicants can only be interviewed once. Interview scores achieved from an applicant’s first application will be used in the assessment of any subsequent application.
Does SFR impact eligibility?
An SFR from previous years on an applicant's academic record does not affect their eligibility for the course. There will be no WAM for those units to be included in the calculation. The SFR limit is for a maximum of 48 credits points per course, regardless of the length of the course.
Can I defer an offer?
Applicants should note that deferrals will not be allowed except under exceptional circumstances. Requests to defer will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Common scenarios & questions
View
I transferred into Biomedical Science. Am I still eligible for part of the 70%?
You will be considered for part of the 70% allocation if you complete at least 96 credit points of study within your Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash.
If you accept more than 48 credit points of credit (typically 8 units/1 full year) towards your Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree at Monash, you will still be eligible to apply for the Graduate Entry Medicine at Monash, but would not be considered for of the 70% allocation.
My degree was completed over 10 years ago. Can I still apply?
Monash does not apply a 10 year recency rule for the purpose of calculating a WAM for entry. However, applicants may find it beneficial to refresh their knowledge by undertaking some form of other study at a tertiary level before commencing.
Can I take single subjects to meet eligibility requirements?
Applicants who do not meet the unit pre-requisite entry requirements can undertake single subjects that will provide eligibility for entry. However the WAM would be calculated on the degree you have undertaken and any results from single units would not be used in the calculation.
I do not think I did very well in my interview. Can I attend another interview?
No. The results from your first interview will be used if you apply again in another intake.
Can I receive any feedback on my interview performance?
MMI scoring is completed by a different interviewer for each scenario. Each scenario's questions are scored individually and the interviewers do not meet to discuss each individual applicant. There are also no comments or feedback provided by the interviewers. Bearing this in mind, feedback is not possible.
Can I convert or upgrade to a non-BMP place?
The allocation of the BMP places is made by the Faculty to the lowest ranked successful applicants. so there is no way of converting your offer to a non-BMP place. If you do not want a BMP place, you would have to reject your offer for the course.
In some circumstances, if non-BMP offers are not accepted, we may upgrade a small number of BMP places once all offers are finalised and just prior to semester commencing.
If some time during the semester a CSP student discontinues, we will not upgrade a BMP place as the contracts with the Department of Health would have already commenced.
I received credit for a required Science unit. Do I still have to complete 5?
If the Science faculty has given you credit based on equivalency of one of their units, that unit will be counted as one of the prerequisite units, however the results will not be taken in consideration in the WAM calculation.
Can I apply from the Graduate Entry Pharmacy?
If you are accepted into Graduate Entry Pharmacy at Monash (entering into third year), you will have met their requirements for Years 1 & 2 which will then qualify you with a Monash acceptable degree. Your WAM will be calculated on the 2 years of your Monash program.
Can I apply from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)/Master of Pharmacy?
You can apply for Graduate Entry Medicine as early as the completion of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) component which is your second last year. However, you would need to take an alternative exit if successful. You cannot defer your medicine offer to complete a fifth and final year to obtain the Master of Pharmacy.
Does an Honours year increase my chances of gaining a place?
No, separate honours year results are not used when calculating WAM. It is based on your undergraduate results only.
I have two undergraduate degrees. Which WAM do you use?
If you have completed two separate undergraduate degrees (i.e. not a double degree), the WAM of the most relevant degree will be used. If both degrees are deemed to be relevant, then the WAM of the most recent undergraduate degree will be used.
Please note, if you have completed a double degree, the overall course WAM will be used.
Does study abroad impact my chance of being offered place?
There is no impact, however your results for your study abroad will not contribute to your overall WAM.
If you have transferred from another course or university, study abroad units are not counted as ‘having completed a minimum of 96 credit points’ These units would have to form part of the year not completed at Monash.
Can I apply for any credit based on previous studies?
No. We do not award credit for prior study in the medicine program.
Can I defer an offer?
Deferrals are assessed on a case-by-case basis and are only approved for exceptional circumstances (e.g. compulsory military service).
