Biography

Alex has been a teaching associate with DCEHPP since 2010 and is currently an Adjunct Senior Lecturer. He is also a medical doctor working at The Alfred hospital, as well as research fellow with the National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI). Together with Dr Brett Williams, Alex founded what is today a vital part of the paramedic program at DCHEPP, namely peer-assisted learning. Alex has a strong focus on fostering junior researchers and enjoys helping them overcoming the initial barrier in conducting research. His main research lies in haemorrhagic shock, pre-hospital prediction of in-hospital blood product use, as well as the future of synthetic blood. He was awarded the Hatem Salem Award for Medical Student Research Excellence for his thesis.

Research Interests

CPR-induced consciousness, a term defined and identified by Matthew Shepherd and Alex. Haemorrhagic shock, prediction thereof, and its role as a surrogate marker for critical haemorrhage. Ongoing work with synthetic blood is hoped to revolutionise the care of severely injured bleeding patients. Peer-assisted learning, methods, implications and impact.
