Title: Improving access to healthcare for women of a refugee background living with chronic pain

Supervisors: Grant Russell, Liz Sturgiss, Helen Brown

Little is known about the experiences of refugee women living with chronic pain and the care they receive. My doctoral research focuses on understanding the experiences of refugee women with chronic pain, and how they navigate the health care system to receive care. Given the complex nature of persistent pain and the pre-and post-settlement experiences endured during the plight of refuge, several barriers exist that prevent a cohesive approach to health care provision for women of a refugee background. My PhD seeks explore the role of culture in shaping the experiences and coping mechanisms of persistent pain in minority populations and to provide greater insight into the delivery of culturally component care by health-care providers.
