Imaging for Advanced Radiation Therapy Practice

Course description

Within radiation therapy there is an increasing application of new imaging technologies to assist in the accurate localisation and treatment of patients, in order to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this program is to increase the skills of participating radiation therapists to support the knowledgeable application of imaging technologies in planning and treatment and support daily treatment decision making in IGRT/Adaptive protocols. Participants will also gain skills to assist in protocol development, implementation and data collection, and be a resource for the wider radiation therapy team.

Mode of delivery

Non-award online distance education program delivered by Monash University, supported clinically by selected radiation oncologists and clinical facilitator. Clinical workbooks and academic materials provided by Monash University.

Please note access to the Monash University library is not available with non-award courses. It is advised that you arrange access to journal subscriptions externally to the University.

Course Duration

Participants have the option to complete the full course in 2 semesters (1 year) – this method involves the study of one academic unit and one clinical unit per semester, a total of 4 units of study.
Alternatively the academic units may be completed in one year and the clinical units in the following year. The academic units are a pre-requisite to the clinical units.

Assessments are conducted throughout the semester. Due dates for all assessments are provided at the commencement of each semester. Assessment format may include learning contracts, written assignments; case studies in written and power point formats, professional portfolios, self-evaluation, extended reflective case analysis, and problem based learning cases, case logs, an image recognition exam and clinical skills assessments. There is no end of semester written exam.

Clinical learning outcomes

  1. Describe and evaluate the application of advanced imaging modalities in your organisation, as related to one of the following regions: head and neck, thorax or pelvis
  2. Critically evaluate and interpret a range of patient case notes and histories, identifying any contra-indications which may affect volume delineation, planning and treatment verification processes
  3. Synergise your understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and ICRU requirements in relation to individual patient cases, to enable supported delineation of tumour volumes and critical structures
  4. Work within the legal and ethical constraints of “The Advanced Practitioner” as specified by the clinical centre and as directed by the RO Mentor
  5. Critically evaluate the current evidence base relating to the application of advanced imaging modalities
  6. Justify in relation to evidence the rationale for imaging in the pre-treatment, planning and treatment verification stages of radiation therapy on a 'case by case' basis
  7. Discuss and reflect on contemporary approaches to imaging and relate to individual patient cases encountered during the radiation therapy planning and treatment.

Academic learning outcomes

  1. Identify a range of key anatomical structures and pathologies on CT & MRI images
  2. Evaluate contemporary approaches to volume delineation and image matching
  3. and reflect on the clinical significance of target volume delineation in relation to International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) guidelines
  4. Describe in detail the imaging equipment used in pre-treatment localisation and planning
  5. Critique the imaging techniques used during pre-treatment localisation and planning
  6. Describe in detail the imaging equipment and critique the rationale and techniques used in treatment verification
  7. Discuss the role of the multi-disciplinary team in relation imaging and the care of patients with cancer.

To enrol you need to complete the enrolment application form and email this along with supporting documentation (proof of qualifications, proof of citizenship (Domestic applicants only), proof of employment (International applicants only) and a letter of support from your clinical centre that also states the names of your Radiation Oncologist mentor and Radiation Therapist facilitator(Clinical units only) to: Catherine.osborne@monash.edu

Enrolments close on 31st January annually

Once your application has been processed, and if you are accepted onto the course fees need to be paid prior to the commencement of each semester.

Course fees

International Full course is $5000 (4 units of study) or single unit enrolment is $1250

Course dates

Semester 1: Early March – Late June annually
Semester 2: Late July - Late November annually
