Profile

Averil Grieve provides cultural, language and academic support for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) students on placement in the Master of Social Work programme at Monash University. She also trains field educators in transcultural teaching practices and working in multicultural settings.  Averil has a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Cross-Cultural Communication from the University of Sydney. Her doctorate focused on the formation of identity in a second language and her master’s specialisation was intercultural workplace communication. Averil has coordinated a range of units in the teaching and learning of languages, was a research fellow in language testing, has written and edited a series of English language textbooks and designed the bilingual programme of a German-English bilingual primary school in inner-Melbourne. She is a Monash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education (MCSHE) affiliate with a research focus on developing pre-placement workshops for CALD students as well as specialised training for field educators of CALD students.
