Profile

Averil  Grieve has a PhD in Applied Linguistics (University of Melbourne) Master of  Cross Cultural Communication (University of Sydney), Bachelor of Arts  (University of New England) and is an academic support lecturer for  international students in the Master of Social Work programme at Monash  University. She completed her doctoral study on the formation of identity in a  second language and has an in-depth knowledge of issues relating to  cross-cultural communication. Averil has lectured in a range of applied  linguistic subjects at the University of Melbourne, including second language  teaching methodologies, research in education and applied linguistics, language  in society, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and first language acquisition. She  was also a research fellow in language testing, has written and edited a range  of English language textbooks for the German market, and designed the bilingual  programme for a German-English bilingual primary school in  inner-Melbourne. She currently focuses on supporting students from diverse  cultural and linguistic backgrounds in their development of spoken language and  academic skills, especially when on social work placement.
