Dr Hussain graduated in Medicine from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh in 2001. She obtained a Masters of Public Health from Mahidol University, Thailand in 2007. She was awarded the prestigious Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, Australian Postgraduate Award and a Faculty Excellence Award (Monash University) to join a PhD, which she completed in 2015 from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences of Monash University, Australia. Her PhD project investigated the novel and systemic risk factors for knee and hip osteoarthritis.

Dr Hussain's research interest involves exploring the metabolic and inflammatory factors in musculoskeletal conditions, particularly osteoarthritis and low back pain. She developed extensive expertise in epidemiological methods, designing and implementing large scale studies, data linkage studies, monitoring programmes.
