Val worked as a secondary school teacher before completing a Masters Degree (1995) by research in Australian History on the topic of maternity and work in twentieth century Australia. Since then she has worked as a social policy and health researcher/adviser in the Victorian Parliament and as a health promotion coordinator in a Victorian Primary Care Partnership. She completed a Graduate Diploma in Public Health in 2007, receiving a VicHealth award for epidemiology during her studies. In 2009, Val commenced her PhD (part-time) under the primary supervision of Dr Charles Livingstone (Associate Supervisor: Professor Margaret Alston; External Supervisor: Dr Cecily Maller – RMIT).
Val's research interests are social and health inequities; environmental sustainability and health; health promotion; feminist theory; and knowledge translation and policy.
Val is a member of the Friends of the Climate and Health Alliance (CAHA) and the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA).
