Graduate Diploma of Aviation Medicine

The Graduate Diploma of Aviation Medicine provides medical practitioners with a comprehensive and deep knowledge of aviation medicine in all its aspects, including flight physiology, clinical and regulatory aviation medicine, human factors, accident investigation and aviation safety, and medical issues affecting aircrew and passengers in military, spaceflight and civil aviation operations.

Taught by a highly qualified and experienced international team of aviation medicine specialists, the course combines in-depth theoretical knowledge with strong links to the global aviation industry.


The course consists of eight core units, 6 CP each, for a total of 48 CP. Completed in one year full-time or two years part-time. The syllabus is designed to cover the majority of the training curriculum of the Australasian College of Aerospace Medicine.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected students will be able to:

  1. Categorise the physiological effects of the flight environment
  2. Classify the various physical, chemical, radiation and biological hazards in the aviation environment, and their potential effect on the health and fitness to fly of aircrew and passengers
  3. Differentiate the legislative and regulatory aspects of aviation medicine
  4. Discuss the principles of clinical aviation medicine, and the application of those to the aeromedical decision-making process
  5. Explain the various human factors which influence the performance and safety of pilots
  6. Distinguish key principles of aviation safety and aircraft accident investigation, including safety culture and safety management systems, the investigative process, pathology, toxicology, aircrew escape and survival
  7. Discuss operational aviation medicine issues, including spaceflight, military aviation, helicopter operations, airline operations, aeromedical retrieval and air traffic control.
