Media Skills for Academics and Clinicians

Are you a clinician or academic who would like to engage with media to promote your work, but are unsure how to do this?

Would you like to gain confidence in interview techniques and social media?

Academics and clinicians who engage with media have the potential to improve public health knowledge, provide evidence based commentary to 'fact check' internet myths and extend the impact of their research via the amplification of social media. Research has found that when the mainstream press covers scientists’ work, their papers are more frequently cited in subsequent academic literature. Anecdotal reports also indicate that engaging larger and more diverse audiences can lead to other benefits including new collaborations.

Moreover, media coverage of medical news influence policy makers including government.

This course is designed to train academics and clinicians in media engagement skills in order to take advantage of these opportunities.

Course outline

In this one-day interactive course, participants from academic and clinical backgrounds will:

  • Discover why it is important for academics and clinicians to engage with media and not remain in academic silos
  • Discuss the impact of media interaction and how it can improve your career as well as improve public health through provision of expert, evidence based commentary
  • Participate in mock interviews with a health journalist in front of the group. This is an important skill that can be practised in this safe environment, and constructive feedback will be provided. Past participants have rated this one of the most important benefits of this course.
  • Learn tips and tricks for safe media engagement while avoiding pitfalls
  • Cover the various media channels that may be appropriate to promote your work including social media

There will also be the opportunity to engage with like minded academics and clinicians, and learn from your peers experience.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance and impact of media engagement
  • Practice interview skills on a research topic of their own with a health journalist
  • Learn how they can use media to impact policy
  • List appropriate social media channels to promote their work, along with benefits and pitfalls
