Master of Social Work
“My name is Kai Yan, you can also call me Alston. I come from Sichuan Province, China (where the panda lives). In 2015, I graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with double majors in behavioural studies and communication.
I chose to study a Master of Social Work at Monash because of its renowned global reputation and high quality of teaching. Also, as a former Monash student, I really feel that Monash cares for students every step of the way. There are always services and additional classes for students who need extra help.
The thing that I enjoy the most about studying social work is the diversity of my peers. I am really thrilled to see people from different countries, cultural backgrounds, religions and beliefs come to Monash to study social work, in the same hope of assisting people who are in need, and also making a difference in the society.
I completed my first placement with Cohealth, a not-for-profit community health organisation that provides vital local health and support services including medical, dental, allied health, mental health, aged care and counselling. I was thrilled to be placed at Cohealth’s Kensington site, where I could put academic theories into practice. The staff were friendly and caring; it was such an amazing and fruitful experience!
With all the skills that I have learnt so far, I'd like to practice them within a various settings. In the future, I hope to provide considerate and thoughtful services for a range of people, with a focus on rainbow and CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) communities.”
