Industry collaboration opportunities

Various government and other bodies offer incentives to universities and external partner organisations to build collaborative research projects. We look for opportunities to help you leverage your own financial commitment to raise funds.

How can we get funding for our project?

Get in touch with us to discuss partnership opportunities in detail. There are also many other leveraged funding schemes available and we work with our partner organisations to access these schemes as they become available.

Funding programs

We welcome industry to partner with us and leverage the following research funding opportunities:

Australian Renewables Energy Agency

ARENA supports renewable energy activities through its funding programmes, which help develop technologies and improve business models with regards to renewable energy projects to reduce overall industry costs. Their Research and Development Programme supports world-class research and development in priority renewable energy technologies in competitive rounds.

Industrial Transformation Research Hubs – Australian Research Council

The Industrial Transformation Research Hubs is a scheme that will engage Australia's best researchers in issues facing the new industrial economies and training the future workforce. This scheme will support collaborative research activity between the Australian higher education sector and industry designed to focus on strategic outcomes not independently realisable.

Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF)

The Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) helps Australian researchers from public and private sectors to participate with Indian scientists in leading-edge scientific research projects and workshops.

The AISRF is Australia’s largest fund dedicated to bilateral research and one of India’s largest sources of support for international science.

Entrepreneurs Program (AusIndustry) – Advisers and facilitators

The Entrepreneurs’ Program gives you access to a national network of more than 100 experienced private sector advisers and facilitators, to help you improve productivity and competitiveness.

It comprises:

Accelerating Commercialisation, an initiative that encourages and assists small and medium businesses, entrepreneurs and researchers to commercialise novel products, processes and services.
Business Management, which provides various opportunities to grow your business.
Innovation Connections, which gives you an innovation facilitator to identify gaps and opportunities.

Innovation Connections (CSIRO)

Maximum Available $50,000

The CSIRO helps SMEs collaborate with the research sector to develop new ideas with commercial potential and identify knowledge gaps that are preventing business growth.

SIEF STEM+ Business Fellowship Program (CSIRO)

Maximum Available: $105,000

Provides funding support to enable Australian SMEs to undertake longer-term research projects with early-career researchers from Australian research organisations.

Linkage Projects (Australian Research Council (ARC))

$50-$300k for 2-5 years

These grants support research and development projects that involve collaboration between university researchers and external organisations. They are two to five-year programs, with funding of $50,000 to $300,000 per year. External partners must match or exceed the ARC funding in cash and in-kind contributions.

The combined Partner Organisation contributions for a Proposal (i.e. the total of the cash and in-kind contributions of the Partner Organisations) must at least match the total funding requested from the ARC.

Industrial Transformation Research Hub (Australian Research Council (ARC))

$500k-$1M for 3-5 years

Cash & in-kind contributions must at least equal the ARC request.

Cutting edge research on new technologies and economic and social transformation. Research Hubs will engage Australia’s best researchers in issues facing the new industrial economies and training the future workforce. The scheme supports collaborative research activity between universities and industry designed to focus on strategic outcomes.

Industrial Transformation Training Centre (Australian Research Council (ARC))

$650k - $1M for 4-5 years

Cash & in-kind must support training.

A scheme that fosters close partnerships between university-based researchers and other research end-users to provide innovative Higher Degree by Research (HDR) and postdoctoral training for the end-user focused research industries vital to Australia’s future.

Centre of Excellence (Australian Research Council (ARC))

$1M - $5M p.a. for 1-7 years

Prestigious foci of expertise through which high-quality researchers collaboratively maintain and develop Australia’s international standing in research areas of national priority - Involve significant collaboration which will allow the complementary research resources of universities, publicly funded research organisations, other research bodies, governments and businesses to be concentrated to support research.

Cooperative Research Centre – CRC (AusIndustry)

No upper limit for funding - up to 10 years

Cash & in-kind contributions must at least equal the AusIndustry ask.

The Cooperative Research Centres Programme (CRC) is led by industry to develop important new technologies, products and services. The Programme works to help solve major economic, environmental and social challenges facing Australia.

Cooperative Research Centre – Project – CRC-P (AusIndustry)

$3M, <3 years

It is not usual to get the full $3M in funding. Cash & in-kind contributions must at least equal the AusIndustry ask.

Support for short term, industry-led collaborative research.

Sector Growth Program (Future Industries Fund – DEDJTR)

Two streams of matched funding

Focus on developing key high growth, high value industry sectors to further enhance Victoria's competitive advantage by building on existing strengths in each Industry Sector. Must involve consortia of at least 3 members, including at least 1 Victorian SME.

Stream 1: Scoping, Planning, Feasibility - 6 month projects to improve sector understanding of opportunities for growth and improved productivity.
Up to $100,000, $1 funded for every $1 contributed (matched 1:1).
Stream 2: Project Implementation - 2 year projects to enhance sector's growth, productivity and competitiveness
Up to $1M, $1 funded for every $1 contributed (matched 1:1).

New Energy Jobs Fund (Future Industries Fund – DEDJTR)

$50,000 to $1M

Cash contribution 3:1 – for every $3 contributed, receive $1 of funding

Victorian-based projects that create long-term sustainable jobs, increase the uptake of renewable energy generation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive innovation in new energy technologies. New energy technology projects in the following categories: Manufacturing, Technology, Energy Storage, (Community).

There are 3 annual grant rounds.

Manufacturing Program (Future Industries Fund – DEDJTR)

Up to $500,000

Cash contribution 3:1 – for every $3 contributed, receive $1

Assists companies to implement new manufacturing technologies and processes that will provide a critical foundation for growth. Investment in new manufacturing technologies and processes that will generate sustainable new local jobs, including high-value jobs; improve productivity and competitiveness; and target new growth opportunities.

Submit Expression of Interest at any time. Formal application, when requested, to be submitted within 90 days.
