Low emissions coal technologies
Brown coal has long been the main energy source driving the social and economic development of Victoria, meeting the vast majority of the growing economy's electricity needs over the past decades. However brown coal contains a high fraction of water making combustion inefficient and difficult. Researchers are working on drastically cutting the emissions from brown coal power stations by investigating improved methods for power and chemicals production from coal. This includes advanced dewatering technologies, gasification processes, carbon capture technologies (both pre- and post- combustion), and chemical looping processes.
