Bionic Vision

The Direct to Brain Bionic Eye project is the key project of the Monash Vision Group (MVG), and is a collaboration between Monash University, Alfred Health, MiniFAB and Grey Innovation.

The project has two key goals: to develop research capabilities in medical bionics for vision restoration; to produce a cortical prosthetic prototype device that will be demonstrated in at least one recipient in 2015. Many people who are blind or vision impaired have damage to their retinas and optic nerves, which prevents signals reaching their brain, thus MVG aims to restore a sense of sight by transmitting wireless signals directly to multiple implants on the surface of the cortex.

The project is led by Professor Arthur Lowery with the involvement of a number of exceptional academics including Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld and Professor Marcello Rosa and is funded through the ARC Research in Bionic Vision Science and Technology Initiative.
