Mobile Phone as a Public Transport Fare Payment Device (2021-22)
Sunday, 5th September 2021
This project is proudly funded and supported by NTT DATA.
Develop a Mobile App for iOS and/or Android platforms based on an SDK. The App should support all the functionalities of the current fare payment devices. The App must also display all the HMI messages and indicators in line with current readers.
Ultimately, the objective of this work is to produce a prototype fare payment device (reader) hosted by a mobile phone so that if productised, patrons could use mobile phones as validators rather than the general public validators.

NTT DATA, as part of the NTT group, is a global business committed to making life better through technology and innovation. We are experts in managing services contracts and are system integrators, which means we are not wedded to one infrastructure or technology provider, but instead source products from different companies to fit individual situations. We integrate leading technology and the latest hardware to create world-class platforms that can expand and adapt as required. We’re known for our proven expertise in industries like healthcare, financial services, insurance, manufacturing and the public sector, but particularly transit.
NTT DATA has become a long-term partner to Victorian Department of Transport, operating Melbournes public transport ticketing system, known as myki. The myki ticketing system is one of the largest mass transit smartcard projects in the world. The solution is scaled for more than 20 million smartcards that are used for more than 25,000 devices located on trains, trams, and buses, distributed across metropolitan and regional areas, whilst also supporting over 600 retail locations. The NTT DATA solution has seamlessly managed the ever-increasing volume of trips since beginning operations over a decade ago. To keep pace with growth and to provide PTV with the latest in innovation, NTT DATA continues to improve my by implementing technologies that will accommodate the system now and well into the future.
