GAMIFICATION refers to the approach of introducing a ‘gameful’ experience, in a non-game context, to support value creation for the end user. This creation of value is attained through improved user experiences and heightened motivation. In this project, Cochlear proposes to apply gamification techniques within educational software in an effort to optimise hearing outcomes in cochlear implant listeners.
Since the release of the first Nucleus cochlear implant system, advancements in technology have delivered incremental, yet significant, clinical benefits to individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. Such technology may be complemented with rehabilitation programs. Administered by either the hearing professional or listener, these programs aim to improve the hearing experience through task driven exercises using audio and visual feedback.
The success of rehabilitation programs is however significantly constrained by poor compliance. Administered in the home environment, the programs require a significant investment in time and require self-motivation to complete.
Cochlear would like to explore the concept of applying gamification to the rehabilitation process in an effort to circumvent the compliance bottleneck. A gameful, and fun experience will engage and motivate the listener whilst completing educational listening tasks. Targeted listening outcomes will improve functional outcomes and provide feedback on clinical progress to the listener.

To determine if we can motivate cochlear implantees towards better hearing outcomes through gamified education.
The challenge of this project is to deliver a software application that provides an educational rehabilitation platform using a gamified architecture. The application must be driven by the listener using a mouse or touch screen and employ the use of clinically available audio materials and accompanying visuals to motivate the listener towards completing listening tasks.
Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the following additional skills, knowledge & attributes:
- A high level of academic performance, sound technical acumen and be equipped with the technical know-how to complete the project brief
- Relevant skills knowledge or applied experience as a Software Engineer
- Graphics user interface design+interface prototyping
- Strong applied experience with either: iOS (Objective-C and Apple Xcode IDE) or Android mobile platform (C++, Java)
- Ability to work within a team environment is a must
- Academic performance will be taken into consideration for this project.
- Application review and assessment process conducted by key Faculty members.
- Final selection for the project team will be made by Cochlear Limited.
- Students must be available for 12 weeks from December 2014-February 2015.
Cover letter & CV required. The cover letter should include why you're interested in being a member of the project team and additionally outline how your experiences either through work or study support your application when being considered for selection.
