Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI): Public Charge Park Utilisation study and demographic profile of consumer behaviour

Description of the project:

The transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles is still in its infancy. Within the Australian context, we have a total fleet of 18M vehicles, with an annual rate of new vehicle purchases of approximately 1M. At the current stage, we have fewer than 100,000 EVs in the entire fleet. However, on current projections, based on the availability of EV alternatives and global car manufacturer strategies, we can expect that the Australian fleet of EVs will approach 2M vehicles by 2030.

The most common concerns that are influencing EV take up, is:
* Range anxiety
* Cost of the vehicle

This research project is focused on the role of public charging infrastructure and how it will alleviate the concerns borne from range anxiety.

The literature review will focus on European and US based experience with the implementation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI). Core themes that need to be explored:

  • What is the expectation for public vs private charging infrastructure?
  • What ratios of vehicles to chargers are typically successful? Why?
  • How are public charge parks utilised? Where are they located for maximum utilisation? What specific attributes increase charge park utilisation?
  • Explore the correlation between detached housing with off street parking availability, and those that rely solely on public charging infrastructure.
  • Once the European and US literature review is complete, draw conclusions on how this knowledge can be used to scope charge parks within Australia, and determine the most suitable locations that would guarantee high utilisation of the public EVCI.

As one of the world’s largest toll-road operators, everything we do—from designing and building new roads to researching new vehicle and road safety technology— is about getting people where they want to go, as quickly and safely as possible.

Our ideas shape cities, boost economies and redefine landscapes. As our cities’ populations grow, we’re busy creating transport solutions (roads, tunnels, bike paths and more) that will deliver social and economic benefits to these cities for decades to come.
