The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts
In May 2019 Monash University launched Melbourne’s newest cultural and nightlife precinct, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts.
The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts is a $54.3 million performing arts space located at Monash University’s Clayton Campus.
It is funded partly by $10 million from the Victorian Government and $5 million from the Ian Potter Foundation.
The centre hosts a range of performing arts events and plays an important roll of energising the nightlife and entertainment in Victoria’s rapidly growing south-eastern suburbs.
The centre heralds a new era of 21st century performing arts facilities at the Clayton campus and is a demonstration of Monash’s commitment to supporting growth in the performing arts in Melbourne.
The Centre comprises of three venues:
- The revitalised 586 seat Alexander Theatre. Originally build in 1968 and re-opened in April 2018, the Alex is now a multi-function venue for music, theatre and performance
- The new 130-seat Sound Gallery for the performance of music and theatre under optimal acoustic conditions
- A 200-seat Jazz Club which operates as a cafe during the day and at night transforms into a performance venue with a restaurant and bar service.
