PART OF WOOD, METAL AND VIBRATING AIR: A PIANO RECITAL SERIES.
Pianist and composer Benjamin Martin is as intelligent a musician as you’re ever likely to come across. In this rich concert he teases out a famous pensée by another pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni: ‘Bach is the foundation of piano playing. Liszt is the summit. The two make Beethoven possible.’ Busoni’s own arrangements of works by Bach sit alongside the master’s magnificent C minor Partita and one of Beethoven’s sonatas in the same key (Opus 10, No.1). Spectacular and lyrical works by Liszt, including his paraphrase of Beethoven’s famous song To the Distant Beloved, are interspersed.
‘Martin is a serious musician and a serious talent.’
