Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Good health is essential to sustainable development and Goal 3 reflects the complexity and interconnectedness of the two. Goal 3 targets seek to address global improvements in maternal health for women and babies, increasing life expectancy for all and reducing some of the most common and preventable causes of death, such as measles.

This goal has three areas of focus - child health, maternal health and diseases, and each has an emphasis on gender-based discrimination, since women and girls are at risk of increased rates of violence and exclusion from healthcare. The COVID-19 global pandemic has exacerbated these problems and dramatically reduced childhood immunisations around the globe.

More than 6 million children died before the age of 5 in the year 2018. These children were mostly from sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. Maternal mortality in developing countries is still 14 times higher than in first world countries. Demand for family planning outstrips supply and HIV remains the biggest killer of reproductive-age-women across the world.

Reducing maternal mortality rates, ending preventable deaths of children under 5, protection against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria outbreaks and significantly reducing hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases by 2030 are key goals for the UN and its partners.

Other targets include reducing death from traffic accidents, ensuring universal access to sexual health care, reducing tobacco smoking rates and many others.
