Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

UN data revealed that 79.5 billion people were forced to flee war, conflict or persecution during 2019. This is the highest figure ever recorded. The UN also states that: ‘100 people are killed every day in armed conflict, despite protection under international law’. The threat to global peace and security remains a widespread issue that is impacting negatively on sustainable livelihoods, and is being exacerbated by weak institutions and limited access to justice. Goal 16 aims to reduce all forms of violence and related deaths globally.

War and conflict often result in famine, poverty, disease and human rights abuses, particularly for women and children. The UN has recorded that: ‘in slightly more than one in four countries with comparable data from 2012 to 2019 (45 countries), at least 5% of women between 18 and 29 years of age reported experiencing sexual violence in childhood’. Goal 16 calls for the elimination of abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against, and the torture of, children.

According to the UN, ‘fewer than half (44 per cent) of all children in sub-Saharan Africa under 5 years of age had their births registered’. Without a legal identity it is difficult to access universal children’s rights and social and legal services. By 2030 Goal 16 seeks to ensure legal identity for all, including birth registration. It also aims to reduce violence, crime and corruption through strengthening national institutions and ensuring equal access to justice for all.
