Who we are
That’s why we’re working to advance the wellbeing of people and the planet for current and future generations, here in Australia and around the world.
We work to understand, influence and transform systems to achieve sustainable development in Australia and our region. We do this by collaborating with government, industry, academic and civil society partners to build knowledge and capacity, and drive practical change.
Our partnership approach has seen us win awards for our impact focus.
But that’s only part of our story.
We’re also proud to be part of Australia’s largest and most international university – Monash University. In collaboration with the ten Monash faculties, we bring together the strength of Monash in impact-focused projects.
With over 150 staff and PhD students, we combine rigour with relevance. We establish transdisciplinary teams, co-produce knowledge and identify pathways and innovative solutions to help the world achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
At MSDI we use the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework to guide all our work. We believe universities have a critical role to play in helping advance the SDGs through research, education and impact. That’s why we’re leading the way in Australia and our region to advance the Goals and to research the enabling and constraining factors in how different communities and organisations are implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
We measure our impact through real-world results.
At MSDI, we believe it’s our job to unlock the knowledge held in universities and bring it to bear on real-world problems. We measure our impact by our ability to apply research to practical problems and to influence change in policies and practice. Our award-winning interdisciplinary education programs are a big part of that, helping us to build capacity and train sustainable development leaders.
