Climateworks Centre
Climateworks Centre
Climateworks Centre is a not-for-profit founded by Monash University and the Myer Foundation to bridge the gap between research and climate action.
For the past decade Climateworks has played a unique role in Australia’s transition to a net zero future. Climateworks Centre works within the Monash Sustainable Development Institute and is accelerating the transition to net zero emissions for Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. As part of MSDI, Climateworks is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on climate action.
Systems of work
Climateworks works across four physical systems of the economy that produce emissions, and three systems that enable emissions reduction.
Food, land and oceans
Food, land and ocean systems are highly vulnerable to climate change and part of the solution to achieving net zero emissions and safeguarding our environment. Transitioning these systems can help us meet multiple sustainable development and climate change goals in a way that could improve health and livelihoods globally. We’re working with leaders from industry, government and the community to create a roadmap to sustainable food, land and oceans systems.
Cities
How can we reimagine our cities to be sustainable, through buildings, infrastructure and transport? Over half of the global population currently lives in urban areas, projected to reach 70 per cent by 2050. We’re working with stakeholders across this system to lay the foundations for a net zero emissions future.
Industry
Nearly half of Australia’s exports come from economic sectors where carbon emissions are not easily reduced. Timely action is needed for Australian industry to be positioned for competitiveness in a decarbonised global economy. We’re working with a coalition of industry partners to develop innovative pathways to transition Australia to a net zero future.
Energy
Renewable energy is ready to be deployed at scale, and crucial if all other systems are to meet net zero emissions. Renewable energy has exceeded expectations, with growing momentum across the globe. A mature technology solution, it’s well-positioned for widespread deployment, when paired with market reform. We’re supporting Indonesia’s energy transition in line with net zero, and addressing blockers to a swift transition to renewable energy in Australia.
Sustainable corporates
How can corporates stay ahead of the curve in a net zero economy, and build momentum for others to follow their lead? Corporates face increasing pressure from shareholders, the market and their own employees to take climate action. As the world decarbonises, corporates can seize the opportunity to transform with it – or risk being left behind. Climateworks is supporting the corporate sector to understand the why behind decarbonisation, and how to turn commitments into action.
Sustainable finance
How can we ensure that financial markets support the transition to net zero, resilient economies? Sustainable finance is gaining traction across the globe as financial systems and capital flows start to shift, supporting the achievement of global climate goals. Climateworks supports financial sectors across Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific to implement more sustainable practices, and increase the flow of capital to companies, agencies and development bodies acting on climate
Sustainable economies
Nations have everything to gain from rapidly decarbonising our economies to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Rapid progress and plummeting costs in green tech supported by constant innovation are bringing net zero economies within reach. Nations that seize these opportunities can become global leaders in a decarbonised world and deliver greater benefits for their citizens. We’re supporting governments with research and modelling to find sustainable pathways towards net zero in line with the Paris Agreement.
