Monash students to attend International Conference on Sustainable Development 2019 in New York

Eight Monash students are preparing to travel to New York in late September for the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) 2019.

ICSD is the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network's (SDSN) premier annual global gathering and a significant global conference on sustainable development.

Earlier this year, the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), with the support of Monash Abroad, offered four travel scholarships for Monash students to attend ICSD 2019, which runs from September 24 to 25 at Columbia University in New York. A further four Monash students will attend the conference as part of Monash's student delegation.

As the host of SDSN Australia New Zealand Pacific, and a leader on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, MSDI is excited to have six Monash students attending this year's event.

The four scholarship winners are:

  • Sarsha Crawley (Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts)
  • Sarah Morley (Bachelor of Arts)
  • Luke Richards (Master Environment and Sustainability)
  • Ridwanur Rahman (Master of Environment and Sustainability).

Students attending as part of the wider Monash delegation are:

  • Angelica Di Camillo (Bachelor of Environmental Engineering)
  • S.M. Tareque Sultan, (Master of International Development Practice),
  • Jamali Kigotho (Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science)
  • I. Arugu Emmanuel, (PhD Candidate, Monash Business School).

The scholarship winners were chosen based on abstract submissions which relate to the ICSD 2019 theme - 'Good Practice: Models, Partnerships, and Capacity Building for the SDGs' and specifically to the conference's 16 key topics, which range from 'Good Practices in Sustainable Food Production' to 'Responsible Consumption and Production' and 'Indigenous Approaches to Sustainable Development.'

The successful abstract submissions will form the basis of the poster or oral presentations which the students will present at the conference.
The aim of ICSD 2019 is to bring together stakeholders from government, academia, the UN, international agencies, NGOs, and grassroots organisers to identify and share practical, evidence-based solutions that can support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

MSDI is a strong supporter of this aim and the purpose of this scholarship is to help Monash students develop their academic skills, leadership capabilities, and passion towards the development of sustainable development solutions.

During the conference, the Monash student delegation will hear from world leaders, eminent sustainable development experts, academics, and fellow students.

Key speakers include MSDI Chair, Professor John Thwaites, who is also Co-Chair of the global SDSN Leadership Council; New Jersey's Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of New York University's GovLab, Professor Beth Noveck; and Sustainable Development Solutions Network Director, Professor Jeffrey Sachs.
