Jointly organised by the Monash Data Futures Institute and the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, this seminar will cover the recent advancement in the use of public open earth observation satellite data and cloud computing to support national reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals.

The talk will cover Australia’s work under the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) and the international Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS). It will also explore our role in coordinating access to key EO datasets and the use of open datacube technologies, in support of countries and UN agencies reporting on progress towards achieving the SDGs.


Dr Alex Held is the Research Director of the Centre for Observation Program at the CSIRO’s Astronomy and Space Science Unit. He is also an Associate Professor at the Australian National University. Dr Held has over 25 years’ experience in terrestrial remote sensing, and has led several projects and research teams in that time. He represents CSIRO at the inter-agency Committee on Earth Observation Satellites, and is an active delegate for Australia on the Group on Earth Observation (GEO).
