Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads
Company info: Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is responsible for planning, managing and delivering Queensland’s integrated transport environment to achieve sustainable transport solutions for road, rail and sea. TMR works in partnership with other agencies, industry and community organisations to deliver programs and projects, services, and safety initiatives.
PROJECT 1: A systems approach to understanding and preventing risk taker behaviour on the road (CLOSED)
Risk taking is a persistent road safety problem due to the propensity for such behaviours (such as speeding, driving while impaired, distracted driving) to increase a person’s likelihood of having a crash resulting in fatality or serious injury. The safe system, with its pillars of safe roads users, safe vehicles, safe speeds, and safe roads and roadsides, underpins TMR’s work to reduce road crashes. Research has typically focussed on individual system components which contribute to the increased risk, which means that external contributors and interactions remain unaddressed. To address this gap, this PhD will examine the safe system and its applicability to risk takers. With a focus on the Queensland context of driving behaviour and management, the study will consider the relationships between components across the system, as well as the potential for multiple actors and organisations to influence risk taker behaviour and be involved in interventions across the system.
