Prioritising safety in path-planning

The current focus of traffic engineering to minimise time-costs and travel times has always been the benchmark for path planning. With a move toward Vision Zero, a shift needs to be made to focus on savings in death and serious injury for road user path planning. With the introduction of road safety rating systems such as iRAP, the ability to path-plan for the safest journey is becoming more feasible. This project could look through the lens of: technology solutions for path planning; the potential impact of safety path planning on fatal and serious crashes; data linkages that could contribute to better path planning; or how safety path planning fits within the Safe System and contributes towards achieving Vision Zero.

This PhD research program will be supervised by Associate Professor Sjaan Koppel, Associate Professor David Logan, and Dr Jasmine Proud.
