Australia Post has released a set of stamps that feature five watercolour paintings of The Banksias by celebrated Australian botanical artist Celia Rosser.

Formerly trained as a fashion illustrator, Celia Rosser turned her hand to illustrating wildflowers after moving to the country. With her love of banksias Rosser joined the Banksia Project at Monash University, becoming the university’s botanical artist from 1974 to 1999. A key result of this 25-year project is the significant body of work that comprises 76 watercolour and pencil artworks that are now part of MUMA | Monash University Museum Art’s collection. These works have since been published as folios of prints in three volumes titled The Banksias.

The stamps and minisheet in this issue feature Banksia speciosa (Showy Banksia) 1977, Banksia grossa 1977, Banksia coccinea (Scarlet Banksia) 1974, and Banksia cuneata (Quairading Banksia) 1995. An additional work, Banksia baxteri (Baxter's Banksia) 1976 will feature on the stamp minisheet. All of these stamps will be released to the public on 20 February 2018.

MUMA will also loan the Museum’s complete set of banksia watercolour paintings to the Hamilton Gallery for a survey exhibition of Celia Rosser’s The Banksias – Three Volumes. This will also include the three folios of prints from the Rare Books collection of the library. The exhibition will be on display at Hamilton Gallery from 15 March to 20 May 2018.
