This body of work marks the evolution and independence of Nyapanyapa Yunupingu’s practice. The paintings are not defined by sacred law but represent the memories and experiences of the artist’s life. They use traditional earth pigments (ochre) painted onto bark in layers; red and black as a ground with luminescent white rrark (cross-hatching) and figurative elements. Will Stubbs, coordinator of the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre said of these works, ‘She makes marks intuitively, the mark is the meaning and the medium is the message.’
