Queer Readings of the Monash University Collection

November 2021—
Caulfield Library
Monash University, Caulfield Campus

Queer Readings of the Monash University Collection forms part of a program celebrating sixty years of the University’s art collection. For this project, writers and artists have been invited to select and contextualise a work of art through the lenses of their experience and knowledge, with their written responses published on the Monash University Museum of Art website, Queer Readings of the Collection.

Queer Readings seeks to acknowledge that non-normative sexualities and gender identities have been a part of shared social experience for a long time, yet in the past could not (or would not) be read as such. Reading works ‘queerly’ is a strategy for intervening in an art historical record that has participated in reinforcing heterosexuality as the societal norm.

A significant proportion of the Monash University Collection, one of the most important collections of post-1960s Australian contemporary art, is displayed across the Victorian campuses of the University, including in its libraries. The works currently on display on Level 4 of the Caulfield Library are a selection of those chosen by the contributors to Queer Readings.
