Sub-typing ADHD and ASD

The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), and clinical decisions around appropriate treatment options, is made complicated by the clinical diversity of ADHD and ASD symptoms and overlap between the two disorders.

Dr Johnson’s research is comprehensively profiling core cognitive traits across 600 families who have children with ADHD and/or ASD, and typically developing children, to objectively identify and predict biologically-relevant subtypes across the ADHD/ASD spectra. These biologically-relevant subtypes will then be linked to genetic risk profiles for ADHD and ASD.

Dr Johnson is an NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow, and is based in the Bellgrove Laboratory at MICCN. Through her experience in both wet labs and clinical research, she transitioned into underlying genetic influences on cognitive traits such as attention, impulse control, working memory and error processing often seen in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD.
