Taking the lead on sustainability in Malaysia

GS Malaysia

Monash Malaysia is continuing to expand its sustainability leadership with the Monash Sustainability Institute’s (MSI) Green Steps program running for a second year, starting in July.

Pro Vice-Chancellor & President, Professor Helen Bartlett said the University recognised the importance of sustainability and enrichment for Monash Malaysia students.

"There is a growing commitment to addressing sustainability challenges at the campus," Professor Bartlett said.

"Green Steps is an excellent vehicle for developing the experience and leadership potential of our students and for generating sustainability solutions at the campus and in local industries."

Last year’s alumni of the Green Steps @ Monash Malaysia program carried out practical sustainability projects across the campus, working on air conditioning, water harvesting, reducing water bottle use and encouraging staff and students to switch off lighting.

MSI Green Steps Manager, Helena Fern, said it was wonderful to see Monash Malaysia students now having access to the program experience.

“We’re happy to be helping grow a new generation of leaders in Malaysian workplaces, who will help their country face the sustainability challenges ahead,” Ms Fern said.

Consisting of a week’s training from 21-27 July 2015 in the mid-year break and a sustainability internship run by the University, Green Steps is a great opportunity for any student with an interest in the environment to further their workplace skills and employability, no matter their study area. In 2015 some students will also have the opportunity to carry out an internship with a Malaysian organisation, wanting to improve its sustainability performance.

Applications for students close on 13 May 2015. For details on how students can apply, go to www.greensteps.edu.au/malaysia

Monash Malaysia is also helping develop Malaysian industry leadership by hosting a two-day professional development training for staff, run by the MSI. Organisations or staff interested in participating should contact Mr Prame Kumar Parameswaran Nair on +603 5514 5837 or prame.kumar@monash.edu.
