Audiometry (Hearing Tests)
Am I required to have a hearing test?
In accordance with Victoria's Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (OHS Regulations), audiometric screenings (hearing tests) must occur within 3 months of commencement for new staff (or staff new to working in an area or with equipment that produces potentially hazardous noise) and at least every two years thereafter.
If you have been identified as working in an area or with equipment that produces potentially hazardous noise you must undergo audiometric screening (hearing test) as per the OHS Regulations.
What is involved in a hearing test?
The hearing test will take approximately 10 minutes. It will be conducted in an audio booth in a hearing test van. You will be asked to listen to a series of tones, at different pitches and volumes, to assess your hearing. The test occurs in a sound-treated room (audio booth) under controlled conditions. The Audiometrist will communicate with you and provide instructions through your headphones. You will have to focus and listen carefully because you need to respond even if the tone sounds very soft and you can barely hear it. The test measures the very softest sounds you can hear at each frequency tested. You will also be provided education on the importance of hearing protection in the workplace.
The Occupational Health Team will contact you when it is time for you to be tested or retested. If you have recently commenced working in an area or work with equipment that produces potentially hazardous noise, please contact the Occupational Health Nurse Consultants via this online form:
