About Monash University Performing Arts Centres

Welcome to Monash University Performing Arts Centres, your home for extraordinary live experiences.

We acknowledge and pay respects to the Elders and Traditional Owners of the land on which our venues stand.

In 1968 the bold and beautiful Alexander Theatre first opened its doors at Monash University’s Clayton campus, signalling a new era of performance in the south east. Around the campus, new suburbs were being planned, built and settled across the open orchards, fields and market gardens of Melbourne’s eastern fringe. The city was expanding.

In 1971, the Robert Blackwood Hall was built to serve the growing community. This 1598-seat venue holds a special place in the hearts of many Melburnians. Perhaps you performed on stage in one of thousands of school and community performances held here, or sat as a proud parent in the audience at your child’s graduation.

The 426-seat George Jenkins Theatre, located at the Peninsula Campus, was built in 1973 and became part of Monash University in the 1990s and hosts a wide variety of performance styles. This includes local performing arts groups, touring professional companies, corporate, educational and multicultural groups.

In May 2019, Monash University launched the newest cultural and nightlife precinct for Melbourne events, theatre and concerts, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts. The Centre houses three venues:

  • The revitalised 561-seat Alexander Theatre.
  • The new 130-seat David Li Sound Gallery.
  • A 176-seat fully flexible live music venue, The Count’s.

From music, theatre and experiential shows as part of our arts programs, The Count’s series and MLIVE to performances by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Monash University Performing Arts Centres is a place for performers and audiences to share and experience the magic of the arts together. A home for dreaming, storytelling, song and ceremony. A space for community, creativity, discovery and hope.

We present a diverse program of events that seeks to challenge, inspire and connect audiences through extraordinary live experiences.
