‘The Gods Abandon Hector’ covers books 20 to 22 of the Iliad.
As part of the ‘Homer Prepares’ project, James McCaughey, and percussionist Matthew Horsley, take the audience on a journey through the Iliad.
The Iliad is revealed as it comes into being as a series of improvisations.
We see Homer planning each day’s singing; and then realising it as a modern performance of the original.
Homer Prepares is set at an imagined festival on an imagined island to which Homer’s audience have come “from all the islands, the coastal cities, and beyond”.
This is an accessible, contemporary version that captures Homer’s violence, humour and lyricism.
‘The Gods Abandon Hector’ is presented for three nights only, 9, 10 & 11 December,
in The David Li Sound Gallery at Monash University Performing Arts Centre.
