Grant success for Thompson group

10 April 2015

Associate Professor Phil Thompson’s group received two recent research grants from the NHMRC and Cancer Council Victoria totalling more than $1.3 million. For senior researchers in the Thompson group; Ian Jennings, Simon Mountford and Jo-Anne Pinson, the funding is reward for efforts past and  an exciting new opportunity.

We have been developing PI3 kinase inhibitors for some years now, and an NHMRC Development Grant of $462,000 gives us the chance to take our compounds towards commercialisation and clinical evaluation against cancers and cardiovascular diseases,” Jennings said.

In addition to the NHMRC grant, $850,000 in funding has been obtained from the Cancer Council Victoria under the Metcalf Venture Grants Scheme for a project entitled “New Treatments for Multiple Myeloma” led by Professor Ricky Johnstone from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

The project work includes chemical biology approaches to identify new epigenetic targets for the development of novel anti-MM agents.
