Applications of stem cell technology in pharmaceutical sciences
The use of stem cell technology to obtain mature human cells has the potential to provide much improved cell culture models for disease modelling and drug discovery. In addition PSCs can provide human cells for ‘cell therapy’, i.e. replacing defective cells or cells that have been lost due to damage or disease. Our group is focussed on developing improved models of brain disease, particularly in relation to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. We also work on characterisation of neuronal precursors to select the most appropriate phenotypes for cell therapy.
