Professor Stefan Maier, currently based at Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, has been appointed Head of the Monash School of Physics and Astronomy following a global recruitment search to fill the role.

Professor Maier received his PhD in Applied Physics from Caltech in 2003 and spent the following 15 years in the UK, where he continues to hold the Lee-Lucas Chair in Experimental Physics at Imperial College London. His previous academic leadership roles were Head of the Experimental Solid State Physics Group, and Director of Postgraduate Studies, both for the Department of Physics at Imperial.

As the Head of School at Monash, Professor Maier will drive the international profile of the School’s interdisciplinary research and lead traditional and innovative pedagogical activities to optimise the student experience.

“I am delighted to join the Science Faculty at Monash and the highly stimulating intellectual environment in Melbourne,” Professor Maier said.

“As the Head of School, I am particularly looking forward to establishing new interdisciplinary research efforts, building on the vibrant mix of excellent students and staff, and increasing international links,” he said.

Professor Maier's research interests are in plasmonics, metamaterials and nanophotonics with a focus on finding novel ways to manipulate light in a controlled manner via nanostructured surfaces.

He has been on the ISI Highly Cited Researcher list since 2018 and has published close to 400 publications in leading international journals. Development of junior research staff is one of his core academic drivers, with up to now 20 of his alumni in professorship positions across the globe.

Commenting on the appointment of Professor Maier, Monash Faculty of Science Dean Professor Jordan Nash said the School of Physics and Astronomy was recognised internationally for research in a number of fields of physics and astrophysics.

“I am delighted to welcome Professor Maier as the new head of the School of Physics and Astronomy,” Professor Nash said.

“Professor Maier is an experienced academic leader and a world-class researcher who will take the School to even greater heights,” he said.

Professor Maier, who is expected to commence his new role in May 2022, replaces Professor Michael Morgan, who has led the School since 2005.
