Professor Jessica Purcell appointed Faculty of Science Associate Dean Research
Congratulations to Professor Jessica Purcell from the School of Mathematics on her new appointment as the Faculty’s Associate Dean Research.
Professor Purcell replaces Professor Craig White from the School of Biological Sciences. Professor White has taken on the role of interim Head of the School following Professor Moira O’Bryan’s move to the University of Melbourne.
Professor Purcell’s interests are in geometry and topology. She is particularly interested in 3-manifolds, hyperbolic geometry, and knot theory, and problems that overlap these areas, as well as their relationship with other areas of mathematics.
Professor Purcell joined Monash University in 2015 as an Associate Professor. In 2019, she became a Professor.
She was educated at the University of Utah, where she completed a BA Mathematics, the University of Michigan, where she completed a MS, Mathematics, and Stanford University, where she completed her PhD in Mathematics.
Professor Purcell’s previous roles include Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at Brigham Young University, Von Neumann Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and instructor at the University of Texas, Austin.
Professor Purcell has been a guest speaker at the AMSI (Australian Mathematical Science Institute) Summer School where she commented that the biggest challenge facing the global mathematics community involved communication.
“We need to be better at sharing our ideas, and trying to communicate the value of what we do,” Professor Purcell advised.
“We need to have the courage to look at problems from different points of view, and to try to understand the work that is done in other fields and to contribute.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Jordan Nash, congratulated Professor Purcell on her new role.
“I am delighted to announce this new appointment,” Professor Nash said.
“The Associate Dean Research is a key leadership role with oversight for developing Faculty research priorities and strategies.
“This will be an increasingly crucial role in coming years as research funding becomes even more competitive.”
Professor Purcell was one of the 10 Faculty of Science researchers featured in our Researcher Video Profile series. You can watch Professor Purcell talk about her work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnaEG0BpRos
