Research Overview

Travis’ team investigates the genetic and molecular control of cell communication systems during development. His team uses the powerful genetic model organism, the fruit fly, to understand how the activities of important molecules known as growth factors are controlled during complex processes such as cell growth and differentiation. The fruit fly allows them to perform sophisticated genetic experiments to discover new genes and novel mechanisms that regulate growth factors. This is critical for our basic understanding of human diseases such as cancer where growth factors deregulation is a major problem.

Other projects include using flies to study human gene function to discover the genetic and molecular basis of several human diseases.
