Strategies to address gender equity in astronomy research institutes
Professor Andrew Hopkins, Australian Astronomical Observatory
It has been long recognised that there is a strong gender disparity in many professional fields, and astronomy is no exception. Only a third of professional astronomers are women, and the fraction decreases with increasing seniority. This proportion has not changed for the past decade. I will explain why this is a problem for our profession and community and why change is needed. I will suggest some approaches that have been used by institutions around Australia to begin to address the issue and the impact they are having, in order to facilitate discussion and hopefully open up opportunities.
