How eExams work
eExams take place on the eAssessment platform. If you haven’t sat an eExam before, don’t worry – students have told us that the system is easy to use.
To see how it all works, check out our guided video tour.
You can also:
- try out our general knowledge practice exam. Have as many attempts as you like. And don’t worry, it won’t be marked
- if your in-semester test is a Moodle Quiz, take a look at our Moodle quizzes page to find out how they work.
eExams have a number of helpful features, including:
- a timer, to let you know how much time you have left
- a progress bar
- a way to easily identify and access unanswered questions
- an autosave every 30 seconds, to reduce the risk of any lost responses
- a split screen view to help with long-answer questions
- a notes section for each question so you can structure your responses – your notes aren't assessed as part of your exam.
- a flagging feature that allows you to raise a potential issue with a question.
If you think there’s a potential issue with a question (for example, you suspect there’s an error), you can use the flag feature to let us know. And if you click it by mistake, don’t worry, you can always unflag it.
You can’t write what you think the error is – flagging it just alerts us. We’ll then check with your lecturer (where relevant) and if they agree clarification is required, we'll respond through an on-screen notification (but not every flag will result in a notification as it depends on the circumstances). Everyone sitting the exam will see the notification.
eExams currently use the following question types:
- multiple choice
- true/false
- fill in the blank
- short answer
- long answer
- image labelling
- handwritten answer (e.g. equations, diagrams), to be answered on pre-printed answer sheets (on-campus eExams) or blank A4 paper (off-campus eExams). These are uploaded using your smartphone
- file download/upload, where you download a file within the question, modify it, save it and then upload your response for marking.
If you have an eExam question that requires you to download and upload a file:
- read the question and download the file provided
- modify the file according to the question
- save the file, then drag it into the upload area below the text of the question. You can only upload your file(s) during your exam – don’t wait until the end of the exam to do this. To avoid upload issues, the file you upload should be less than 5MB
- once your file appears in the upload area, you can move on to the next question.
Types of eExams
Your eExams may be with or without online supervision. If you have an eExam with supervision, it will use Monash eVigilation – Monash’s very own integrated online exam supervision.
Some eExams without supervision use a lock-down browser to prevent you accessing other programs and your desktop during your exam. You can find out if your final eExam will use Safe Exam Browser by checking your assessment timetable in Allocate+. If you’re not sure, check with your lecturer or your unit’s Moodle page.

Accessing your eExam
If your final assessment is an eExam, click the eAssessment platform link, then navigate to your unit’s eExam. You’ll need to copy the eExam link and paste it into an incognito window in Chrome. You may not be able to see your eExam on the platform until two business days before your scheduled exam, but you won’t be able to access it until the scheduled time of your exam.
In-semester eExams may have a different platform link – you’ll need to check this with your lecturer.
Check the dates and timetables page to find out how and when to access your assessment schedule.
